SAQ to air! 100 years of Communication!

134 134 people viewed this event.

On December 1, 1924, the VLF transmitter, with call sign “SAQ” at Grimeton Radio Station, was put into commercial operation, transmitting across the Atlantic to the receiving station at Riverhead and the responding transmitting station at Rocky Point, both on Long Island, NY, USA. On December 1st 2024, one hundred years later, SAQ will air to commemorate this event. The unique Alexanderson alternator from 1924, with the call sign SAQ, is scheduled for one transmission over the antenna on VLF 17.2 kHz CW.

On this very special day, the message and greeting is telegraphed in Morse code, written by none other than Rik Alexanderson and Lauren Alexanderson, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Ernst Alexanderson, the Swedish-American and engineer behind Grimeton Radio Station. Their message will be a wireless greeting to both radio amateurs in remote places and, via the live broadcast on YouTube, all over the world. A greeting from New York and Washington, where they both live and work today. It feels great! Visitors are welcome to the Grimeton Radio Station Broadcast Hall to experience an SAQ broadcast.
