Press invitation for a field expedition in the unique environment of Grimeton Radio Station

DATE:
Friday, August 18, 2023

TIME:
09.30 – 12.00
(followed by the possibility to attend lunch)

MEETING PLACE:
in the Visitor Center and then go to the antenna area together.

Just over a year ago, the Grimeton World Heritage Site was granted its first LONA project, called “Nature values in the Grimeton World Heritage Site”. The aim of the project is to create better knowledge of the natural values that exist in this unique area, which has been untouched by man for almost 100 years, and how they can be best managed in symbiosis with the cultural values.

On Friday, August 18, all the parties who have been involved in the project over the past year with their expertise and perspectives will gather for the very first time for a field expedition among ancient remains, marrow graves and various finds. They will learn from each other’s perspectives. During this field visit, the aim is to find out if there are any conflicting objectives regarding the management of the cultural and natural values of the antenna site, and how this can be handled in the future so that both perspectives are taken into account and promoted. Staff at the radio station are also eagerly anticipating what they will be presented with this morning when the various experts meet to share their findings.

The project team is now inviting journalists to join the field expedition.

The kestrel thrives in the area. Are there other interesting species here?

The local nature conservation project “Nature Values in the Grimeton World Heritage Site” aims to complement the Grimeton World Heritage Site Care and Maintenance Plan with a more comprehensive picture of the area’s natural values in order to preserve and develop them.

– Grimeton Radio Station was built between 1922 and 1924. The facility required a large area of land, so 106.2 ha of pasture land was purchased from farmers. Since the radio station was put into operation, the area has been continuously grazed. This has created the conditions for what we believe is a rich biodiversity that we are very curious about,” says Camilla Lugnet, CEO of Grimeton Radio Station.

The Grimeton World Heritage Foundation manages the area’s cultural heritage, which largely consists of maintaining the complex 1920s facility. The main document for this work is the care and maintenance plan, where a few pages deal with the site’s natural values and how their protection and conservation will be managed.

– Little is known about the species and habitats present in the area, which increases the risk of destroying natural values during maintenance work. Therefore, this joint work is both extremely exciting and important,” says Camilla Lugnet.
