Bring World Heritage topics into the classroom!

Visit the Grimeton World Heritage Site

Different school classes as well as children’s and youth groups visit Grimeton Radio Station every year. Our school programs are specially designed to suit different ages and subject areas.

For young people, it’s important to understand, take responsibility for, and feel involved in their own cultural and natural environment. Actively learning about World Heritage sites in Sweden also increases understanding—and interest—in World Heritage sites far beyond our own country. “In children and young people, we have the key to a future society where cultural tolerance and respect for differences shall come true.” UNESCO.

World Heritage in Sweden – places that make a difference

To make your visit as meaningful as possible, we’re happy to recommend materials you can use in your teaching afterwards. World Heritage in Sweden (ViS) has produced a few short films that can be shown to students either before or after the visit, and that explain UNESCO’s work with World Heritage through the World Heritage Convention. There is also a new, easy-to-use “toolbox” so you can talk about these places with your students.

How does Grimeton Radio Station make a difference?

Grimeton Radio Station, Varberg is the best place in the world to experience and understand the development of wireless communication. This site, with its unique values, matters to all of humanity, and by managing, using, and developing it we help create a better, kinder world.

It also helps increase understanding and knowledge of why radio is needed in society and, after 100 years, it is still an important player in the field. Its management challenges and inspires existing systems and ideas through various issues, such as the buffer zone, protection of intangible values, working methods, and funding. The site creates pride and a sense of community among local residents, contributing to new activities and products in the surrounding area for both locals and visitors. For the regional visitor economy, the site has also become an increasingly important stakeholder.

Exciting school programs

Codebreakers and World Heritage guardians

At the Grimeton Radio Station World Heritage Site, students get to dive into the fascinating world of radio communication and discover how past innovations have shaped today’s society. In this exciting program, playful activities are combined with learning and teamwork—all in the unique setting of a World Heritage site.

The visit begins with an introductory tour of the World Heritage site and its unique technology, and then students get to test their skills as codebreakers and problem-solvers. In ‘Signal Intelligence‘, students search for hidden Morse signals that reveal secret messages, and in the dramatic ‘The Sabotage‘ they face the challenge of completing a mission using clues and sharp senses. Students also get the chance to create and send Morse signals themselves via our interactive table in the exhibition hall.

With a focus on problem-solving, teamwork, and the importance of cultural heritage, students gain a deeper understanding of how history and modern technology are connected. This gives students the chance to feel like guardians of a World Heritage site and understand how it can belong to all of us—while having a lot of fun.

The Code Hunters at Grimeton:

From radio waves to World Heritage

Crack the codes and explore the Grimeton World Heritage Site—where history and technology meet! In this program, students get a unique insight into the role of radio technology, both historically and in today’s society. After an introductory tour of the World Heritage site, students then dive into hands-on challenges that test their ability to work together, think logically, and solve problems.

Welcome to an adventure where radio waves and World Heritage come together on an exciting journey of discovery!

At the Grimeton Radio Station World Heritage Site, students experience how history, technology, and teamwork can open doors to both the past and the future. In this program, we take students on a journey from the early days of radio communication to today’s society, where radio technology still plays a crucial role.

After the introduction, students get to test their skills as codebreakers and problem-solvers. In ‘Signal Intelligence‘, they find hidden Morse signals and decrypt secret messages, while ‘The Sabotage‘ challenges them to follow the clues and identify the culprit. Through interactive stations in our exhibition, students can send Morse signals themselves and gain insight into how Grimeton is still a lifeline in an increasingly digitalized world.

With a focus on learning, teamwork, and enjoyment, the program provides insight into why World Heritage sites like Grimeton matter—and how we can all help protect them for the future.
